Berlin is quite accessible – you can basically get to know the city by bike or by public transport quite comfortably – or you can cruise across Berlin by car. There is no city maut or city tax for cars as there is in Stockholm and London. Also all bridges are free of charge – and compared to other cities the overall traffic ‘situation’ is quite modest. Of course, there is always some construction going on and most likely some street is closed – but Berlin – or actually Berliners have learnt to deal with those numerous construction sites.
However sometimes, especially in the summer time, half of the inner city streets might be closed down for the Berlin Marathon or a similar event. So be careful if you intend to go from A to B on a sunday – you might end up in a mega traffic jam.
Berlin Traffic Map – How to avoid bad traffic jam surprises
There are ways to avoid getting stuck in a traffic jam – and of course it’s again an interactive map. You can either find it through the homepage of the “Verkehrsinformationszentrale Berlin” (Central Traffic Information Office Berlin) [www.vmz-info.de/en/] or directly by clicking this link.
The map shows the Berlin traffic situation – live – in real time – as good or bad as it currently is. Additionally there are construction sites and closed roads marked in the map to help you planning your road trip across Berlin city in advance.
