Berlin Shopping Guide

As you might already know Berlin is of course not really comparable to other ‘serious’ shopping cities like New York, London, Paris or Tokyo. Decades of segregation have clearly had an impact on the development of the city – so the first thing you should probably know is that Berlin has no clearly recognizable city centre or ‘down town’ or ‘shopping district’ as other cities might have.

The advantage of this ‘disadvantage’ is however, that Berlin still has quite a collection of different small city centers also know as “Kiez”. Basically every neighborhood has its own center – and probably every Berlin district has some kind of shopping area. And in some areas you will find shops, shopping areas and even malls that can easily compete with the well known shopping areas around Kurfürstendamm and Hackescher Markt.

On this and some following pages I want to provide information about shopping in Berlin: typical shopping areas, hidden shopping streets, shopping habits, where and when to shop, what to shop – what not to shop.
